Fishnets

Fishnets fishnets fishnets fishnets.  They’re possibly my favorite legwear in-world, bringing vintage sexiness with a touch of bad girl.  Annyka Bekkers of Blowpop recently released new fishnets, to much fanfare.  She’s put a lot of work into perfecting these.  I thought I’d see how some of my old favorites compare.

Check out the pelvic area, the general flow of the fishnet pattern, the side seams, the ankles, and the feet.  All of these are made well, but one pair in particular stands out for me.  Also, I don’t want to take over the whole feed, but feel free to click on the pic to go to my flickr and see side and rear views of the fishnets.

And a Halloweeny pic, because I felt like it. › Continue reading

I wear pink.

This outfit is a bit of shameless product promotion — I’m wearing Vanitas Vesture’s special edition Breast Cancer Awareness top.  All the proceeds go to Making Strides against Breast Cancer, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to help find a cure.  You can find out more here.  Pink is not a color I wear often, but I make an exception to help draw attention to this worthy cause. › Continue reading

Denim One

This begins what will be a series of jean comparison posts.  Most posts will focus on a specific style or cut, such as holey jeans or high-waisted jeans.  But, I thought I’d start with a simple post showing the importance of cut, and discuss the factors I consider in a pair of pixellated jeans.

Jeans are ubiquitous in both my lives.  I love them; they’re so easy to dress up and dress down for most casual occasions.  However, the look you’re going for will determine which pair of jeans you grab from your closet or inventory.  The cut of a pair of jeans often determines the mood — take a look at how each of these four pairs of jeans subtly change the overall feel of the outfit.

Now, let’s talk about what makes a pair of jeans unique.

A few darker skins at the Expo

So, you may know that I like freckled skins.  What you may not know is that I also really like the darker range of skins.  (Freckled dark skins are of course the holy grail.)  So here is a small selection of some of the darker skins available at the Skin/Shape Expo.

I find that darker skins in particular show off the unique character of the skins.  Not only does each skinmaker create unique shades in the darker range, the differences in facial features — lips, eyes, nose, brows — often become more pronounced.  Now, I’m wearing my usual shape, so of course they’ll appear different on your shape — do try them on.

With different skinmakers come different body shadings.  We’re looking at the overall body shading and the usual fine details — collarbone, boobs, elbows (front and back) abs, knees (front and back), toes, shoulderblades, spine, buttocks and heels.  Look closely at how each skin treats these body parts differently.

Now, shoo!  Go try on some dark skins!  Even if you think the darker shades don’t suit you or your av, I encourage you to try on a demo — the elegance of these beauties is worth it.

Also, the bra and panties set is an exclusive release, part of this weeks Fifty Linden Fridays, so if you like it, you’d best grab it before midnight tonight.

Ruth Revisited.

What's going on here?

Total serendipity.  I happened to be wearing a purple shirt when the notice from Long Awkward Poses came through, announcing the release of a new set of poses — Jazzhands.  The notecard explains that this set is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek homage to all the early jazzhands freebie poses.  These new poses are fun and adorable, with modern posing sophistication instead of the bone-breaking awkwardness of early poses.  Anyway, the purple shirt reminded me of our painfully awkward outfit at rezzing, and I knew immediately that I wanted to give Ruth a modern makeover to show off the new posing fun.

No, it couldn't be!

If you were lucky or unlucky enough to be rezzed as Ruth, this look is immediately recognizable.  It may inspire a bit of terror or revulsion, but look again. Little Ruthie actually looks cute now, with › Continue reading

Old and New from Fusemelon and Imagen

Aemilia Case has rebranded her hair store; what once was Philotic Energy now is Fusemelon, with new hair styles and textures, and an expanded product line.  In skin news, Imagen has released new versions of the adorable freckled Irene skins for the Skin/Shape Expo.

Let’s start with the new Imagen Irene 2.0 skins.  They’re appropriately named — this is an updated version of the Irene skin, rather than a whole new one.  Rack Brautigan, the creator, has done a bit of tweaking to improve the overall look of the body.  First, there’s a warmer, generally more rosy tone to the skin.  Also, check out the changes in the breast shading, ribs, stomach, belly button, and knees on the front side.  The rear view shows new shoulderblades, spine, knees, and heelbones.

No changes have been made to the face, which is fine with me.  I’m quite fond of the face.  The all-over freckles are pleasing without being too heavy, and the nose and mouth fit my shape very well.  There is a new set of makeups released for the skin fair, and they’re both adorable and versatile: lightly applied pale blue eyeshadow, a natural face, gentle eyeshadow smokiness, and a classic killer red lipstick with winged eyeliner.

Now, let’s talk about the hair.  › Continue reading

Freckleface at the Skin/Shape Expo

I’m grateful to the generosity of creators that sent review skins; you helped make this possible.  I can’t thank you enough.

Here is a compendium of freckled skins at the Skin/Shape Expo.  I’ve done my best to include all skin-makers in the Expo with freckled faces, however, if I have missed anyone, please let me know, and I’ll add them to this list.  I’ve tried to choose natural or bare skins, so that you can evaluate the skin itself, rather than the makeup.  This wasn’t possible in all cases.  For the most part, there’s one image per creator.  However, I’ve made exceptions for those that have significantly different faces or features available.  (There are a few demos in here; I’m sorry, it couldn’t be helped.)

All skins are worn with the same shape and brow, and no prim lashes were worn, in order to better show the eye-makeup and drawn-on lashes (where applicable).  The skins will look different on your own shape — this includes the eyes, nose, mouth, the works.  So don’t necessarily dismiss a skin that you don’t care for on my shape.  Do try it on for yourself, and see how it fits you.

Now, this post is of course all about the freckles.  How big are the freckles — barely bigger than pores, or more substantial?  Are they just across the bridge of the nose, or do they extend to the rest of the face?  Do the freckles continue down along the collarbone?

How is the face?  This really gets down to personal preference, and what kind of face you prefer.  Hand-drawn or photo-sourced?  Highly detailed and realistic, or idealized and doll-like?  Is the overall shading of the face too flat, or too heavily shaded?  Are there painted-on lashes?  Are the brows detailed, or softly smudged?  Is there good detail around the shape of the eye, and how is the eye crease?  Is the nose soft, or bulbous, or pointy?  How is the mouth shape, and how will it fit on your face?  (You really need to try these on to see for yourself on this one.)  And while I haven’t shown full bodies here, is the collarbone defined to your liking?

Shiny pretty things

Jewelry fair ends this weekend!  If you haven’t been over there, I suggest you go!

Nissa Nightfire, the creator of Magpie, makes colorful, chunky glass jewelry.  What I love about her work is that she also makes glass jewelry in RL — I love when the worlds overlap.

Hair: Truth Nikhita 2 in Pumpkin (tinted)
Skin: Imagen Irene Este Humo (lucky chair)

This set caught my eye, and then I realized everything in the shop was only 20L.  Awesome.  So I assumed that the jewelry must be all alpha textures, but no — this is some crazy microprimwork, the kind that boggles my mind.

I love this piece.  It’s big and shiny and pretty, and comes with matching earrings, and is free.  Awesome, right?

Lounging around

I was pleased when the talented designer and photographer Elysium Eilde of Elymode dropped her Lounging Set on me.  I was over the moon once I tried it on — how adorable are these things?  The quality is superb — these lounging pieces scream softness, from the overall cottony texture to the gentle wrinkles, placed just so.  The attention to detail is really remarkable.  In particular, I absolutely love the slouchy cut of these pieces.  There are no straight hemlines or waistbands; the fabric’s riding up this side, or drooping over that hip, just as it would if we were lazing around on a Sunday afternoon.  The cut of each piece — the jacket, the tank, the pants, the panties — is designed to interact with the rest of the set just beautifully.

Now, there are a total of 12 colors; here I’m showing gold, green, and light gray.  The light gray is my fave — it has that perfect heather texture of my fave RL lounging set.  They’re meant to be mixed and matched, and the cuffs on the sweater and pants are color-changeable to every color in the set.  (The cuffs on the clothing texture are well-finished, in case you want to skip the prim attachments.  The attention to detail here is really remarkable.)  They’re also versatile pieces to have in your wardrobe: I’ve dressed them up a bit below.

back to high school

Phire Zuhra of Style Genesis challenged bloggers to show off their high school style, and asked us what crowd we hung out with then.  This was a tough one for me — I drifted along the periphery of several different crowds: the Ivy-league-bound nerds, the drama kids, the band geeks, the student council preps, the stoners, the goth kids.  I had friends in every crowd, but never really belonged to any.  I guess I was a bit of a loner then, too.
